Recruitment at Wolverhampton College |

Good afternoon Resident
West Midlands Police Shine with Recruitment Event at Wolverhampton College, Bilston Campus! West Midlands Police recently hosted a dynamic recruitment and engagement event at City of Wolverhampton College’s Bilston Campus — bringing policing careers to life for local students and inspiring future recruits with hands-on experiences and expert insight into policing roles. Held in partnership with the college, the event welcomed over 100 students from a variety of courses and backgrounds. Attendees had the opportunity to speak directly with serving officers and staff, learn about different police departments, try interactive demonstrations and find out how modern policing technology plays a role in keeping communities safe.
Departments and Teams on DisplaySeveral specialist teams and departments from West Midlands Police showcased their work and spoke with students about what they do day-to-day:
Neighbourhood Policing Teams These teams are responsible for community engagement and tackling local concerns such as anti-social behaviour and crime prevention. Officers build relationships with local residents and businesses to help make neighbourhoods safer and more confident.
Response and Patrol Officers Response officers are often the first on scene when a call for help comes in. They attend emergencies, support victims, secure scenes and ensure public safety across the region.
Roads Policing / Traffic Units These units work to keep roads safe by targeting dangerous driving, managing serious collisions and using specialist equipment like stingers (tire deflation devices) to safely stop vehicles when necessary. Students were shown how stingers are deployed and discussed the role this team plays in reducing harm on the roads.
Breathalyser and Traffic Enforcement Teams Officers explained how breathalysers are used on the roadside to check drivers for alcohol impairment, helping protect other road users. Students got hands-on experience seeing how the equipment works and why it’s crucial for road safety.
Drone Unit The police drone team demonstrated the technology and explained how drones support policing operations — from searching for missing people and gathering aerial intelligence to assisting at large events and major incidents.
Hands-On Learning for Students The event was interactive, with students actively exploring key policing tools and technologies: Learning how a breathalyser works — gaining insight into how officers check for drink-driving. Seeing how stingers operate — with explanations about when and why they might be used. Exploring drone technology — with demonstrations of how drones support real policing tasks. Over 100 students took time out of their day to speak with officers and try these engaging activities, asking questions about career pathways, training, and the realities of working in the force.
Why These Events Matter Recruitment events like this one help West Midlands Police reach more young people and provide real insight into policing as a career — from frontline patrols to specialist technology roles. In addition to traditional officer jobs, the force offers roles in support functions, technical teams, and community engagement, reinforcing that policing is a diverse and rewarding career choice for many.
By bringing this experience to a local education setting, West Midlands Police strengthened connections with students and helped young people better understand the many pathways into policing — whether you’re interested in community engagement, specialist units, or technical roles. | ||||||||
